Tips on how to clean and care for your enamelware

Enamelware is known for its durability and ease of cleaning

In this guide, we are going to give you tips on how you can maintain your enamel kitchenware

  • Dishwasher: Enamelware is dishwasher safe. Scrub off stains first with a sponge or wooden spoon. Since some dishwasher detergents can be quite harsh, we recommend cleaning your enamelware as often as possible by hand with water and mild dish soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners or steel wool.
  • Removing stains with baking soda and water paste: You can use baking soda to remove stains: Mix around 65 grams of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water. The paste should not become too thick or runny and should stick to the stains that you are cleaning. Spread the paste onto the stain and allow it to dry. Once dry, spray it with vinegar to cause it to sizzle and foam up. Then use a sponge on the stain to scrub it away until it comes off completely. Wash it with water once you are done and dry it with a towel.
  • Removing stubborn stains with lemon juice and salt: For stubborn stains you can use a mixture of lemon juice and salt: Sprinkle salt onto the stain, making sure there’s enough to cover it and squeeze lemon juice over the salt. It should turn into a paste that you can use to scrub against the stain with a sponge. The stain should slowly start to lift off the enamel, and you can wash it off with warm water.
  • Removing stains with laundry detergent: Clean your enamelware by hand with water and mild dish soap. Fill your enamelware with water, put it on your stove and wait until the water is hot. Add a spoonful of liquid laundry detergent and let the mixture boil for some minutes. Allow it to cool down gradually. Wash your cookware with mild soap or in the dishwasher afterwards.

Useful extra information: Always dry your enamelware with a towel. Air-drying can cause water stains that will be difficult to remove. Do not stack wet enamelware. They can stick together and can become difficult to separate.

But what if my enamelware is chipped or scratched

Unfortunately, chips and scratches can happen. If it just a small scratch you can coat your enamelware in cooking oil to prevent rusting. Once your enamelware is chipped and top layers are coming off, we do not recommend using it for food items. Instead, you can use plates as plant coasters or as decorative plate for your keys and personal items. Mugs and cups can be used to grow herbs and flowers. They will also find good use in your office.

  • Removing small scratches and stains with baking soda and lemon juice: If your enamelware shows signs of scratches that won't clean off with water and dish soap, make a paste mix of lemon juice and baking soda with the same ratio as the baking soda and water mixture. Spread it evenly on your enamelware and leave the mixture on for around 30 minutes. Scrub it off with a sponge and water.
  • Removing scratches and stains with Barkeepers friend: You can sprinkle "Barkeeper’s Friend" all over your enamelware, add water and spread around the mixture. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and lightly scrub the scratches to remove stains and rust.

⚠ General advise: In case you use your enamelware in the oven, let it cool down slowly. Don't cool it down with cold water. Never use it in the microwave.
